In May of last year, I mentioned a hip hop group by the name of the Lost Children of Babylon in a post about the influence of ancient astronaut theory in popular music. I found the group to be very interesting and decided to follow-up on them. Initially, I was under the impression that they were a group of hip hop artists that had independently interpreted some ancient texts to fit in with the ideas of ancient astronaut theory. Think Zachariah Sitchin with a beat. Anyway, after a little more research they seem to be adherents to Nuwaubianism. Nuwaubianism is a often thought to be a cult, but has been described as a brotherhood by its followers. It is often categorized as a black power movement with some spiritual teachings. The Lost Children of Babylon use several of the the African/Egyptian-centric, and space god themes of Nuwaubianism in their material. Needless to say, they have a lot of “interesting” beliefs such as “a recent belief is that the Christian term rapture really refers to the returning of raptors who will dine on the now ripe white flesh” (direct quote from Wikipedia’s entry on Nuwaubianism). They have also concocted several paranoid etymologies of English words that are simple untrue despite being wildly creative. One example would be the word believe as in “be-lie-eve: to lie to Eve’s children.” (directly from the Wikipedia entry again). The Oxford English Dictionary will tell you everything you could ever want to know about any word in the English language and best yet, it has no political agenda or paranoid axe to grind. Also they like a lot of followers of Nuwaubianism, The Lost Children of Babylon are very supportive of the movement’s founder, Malachi Z. York, who is currently a convicted child molester serving a 135 year sentence. Of course, the Nuwaubians believe York is innocent and has been falsely imprisoned as a part of a sinister conspiracy of the U.S. government. Speaking of conspiracies, the Lost Children of Babylon released an entire album dedicated to the 911 “conspiracy” in 2005. So, these guys are all over the place.

It’s a shame the music isn’t better. It made this post a real chore. They seem to like to drop the Wu Tang Clan’s name a lot in interviews and on their website, but as the Wu Tang Clan says, “Wu Tang Clan Ain’t Nothin’ To Fuck With.” Wu Tang can say this because they are talented and can actually rhyme. The Lost Children of Babylon have paranoid and ridiculous lyrics based on a very flawed ideology based on several even more flawed ideologies.

Music: Listening to Fantasies

In this post, I’ll take a look at a few  musical artists  that have represented ancient astronaut theory in their songs. I think you’ll see that for the most part, songs about ancient astronaut theory are just an artist toying with the concept and moving on to other subject matter. At any rate, these songs are like small science fiction mini-stories and luckily not filk.

  • Frank Zappa’s “Inca Roads” (from 1975 on the album One Size Fits All): Based on what I know of the late great Frank Zappa, it is doubtful that this is a serious attempt in furthering ancient astronaut theory. The lyrics  seems like it is just a parody of the concept. I included it in this post because it is probably the most well known ancient astronaut theory song, plus it gave me an excuse to listen to Zappa and the Mothers of Invention again. Check it out on YouTube. The lyrics for “Inca Roads” are below.

Did a vehicle
Come from somewhere out there
Just to land in the Andes?
Was it round
And did it have
A motor
Or was it
Something
Different

Did a vehicle
Did a vehicle
Did a vehicle
Fly along the mountains
And find a place to park itself

Or did someone
Build a place
To leave a space
For such a vehicle to land

Did a vehicle
Come from somewhere out there
Did a vehicle
Come from somewhere out there
Did the indians, first on the bill
Carve up the hill

Did a booger-bear
Come from somewhere out there
Just to land in the Andes?
Was she round
And did she have a motor
Or was she something different

Guacamole Queen
Guacamole Queen
Guacamole Queen
At the Armadillo in Austin Texas, her aura,
Or did someone build a place
Or leave a space for Chester’s Thing to land
(Chester’s Thing… on Ruth)
Did a booger-beer
Come from somewhere out there
Did a booger-bear
Come from somewhere out there
Did the Indians, first on the bill
Carve up her hill
On Ruth
On Ruth
That’s Ruth

  • Chris de Burgh’s “A Spaceman Came Travelling” (from 1975 on the album Spanish Train and Other Stories): This is about as far away from the coolness of Frank Zappa as you can get! As you may remember, Chris de Burgh is more famous for 1986′s “The Lady in Red” than this particular song. Anyway, this soft rock cheese fest is retells the story of Gabriel visiting the shepherds in the form of an ancient alien contact resulting in the establishment of a UFO religion. Check it out on YouTube. The lyrics for “A Spaceman Came Travelling” are below.

A spaceman came travelling on his ship from afar,
‘Twas light years of time since his mission did start,
And over a village he halted his craft,
And it hung in the sky like a star, just like a star…

He followed a light and came down to a shed,
Where a mother and child were lying there on a bed,
A bright light of silver shone round his head,
And he had the face of an angel, and they were afraid…

Then the stranger spoke, he said “Do not fear,
I come from a planet a long way from here,
And I bring a message for mankind to hear,”
And suddenly the sweetest music filled the air…

And it went la la la la, la la la, la la la…
La la la la, la la la..
La la la la, la la la, la la la…
Peace and goodwill to all men,
and love for the child…
La la la la, la la la, la la la…
La la la la, la la la..
La la la la, la la la, la la la…
Oh oh oh…

This lovely music went trembling through the ground,
And many were wakened on hearing that sound,
And travellers on the road, the village they found,
By the light of that ship in the sky, which shone all round…

And just before dawn at the paling of the sky,
The stranger returned and said “Now I must fly,
When two thousand years of your time has gone by,
This song will begin once again, to a baby’s cry…”

And it was la la la la, la la la, la la la…
La la la la, la la la…
La la la la, la la la, la la la…
Peace and goodwill to all men, and
love for the child…
And I hear la la la la, la la la, la la la…
La la la la, la la la…
La la la la, la la la, la la la…
This song will begin once again
to a baby’s cry…

Oh the whole world is waiting, waiting to hear the song again,
There are thousands standing on the edge of the world,
And a star is moving somewhere, the time is nearly here,
This song will begin once again, to a baby’s cry…

  • The Lost Children of Babylon’s “Will You Be Prepared? (When the Elohim Return)” (from 2001 on the album Where Light was Created: The Equidivium): Unlike the artists above The Lost Children of Babylon frequently mention aspects of ancient alien contact in their songs. This self-described “spiritual hip hop” group has been active since 1996 when they appeared on Jedi Mind Trick’s Amber Probe EP. I would like to do an entire post on just them later in the year based on the breadth of their material.  Check them out on YouTube. I’m sorry I couldn’t find any lyrics for this song, but I did find one of several interesting comments on the YouTube page for this song from a user known as “connected44.” “My-i-hole”, indeed!

“Its all just an alien experiment, gods are aliens from the heavens. any advanced civilisation would be treated as gods by a lesser advanced culture.
remember the story of 3 wise men following a ufo ?
Your already in hell, it is of our own making and is clearly signposted everywhere.
ps look at Elohiym spelt backwards My-i-hole symbolised by the eye of horus
Question Reality to see through the illusion
Annunaki = Nephilim = Aliens = Angels = Gods = Demons”

Music: The Name Game

I am in the process of studying how ancient astronaut theory is presented in various forms of music.  With this blog entry, I would like to just focus on a few musical acts that take their names from the theory or parts of the theory itself.  These artists intentionally or unintentionally validate the theory or provide an “I dunno… maybe?” answer to the question with their self-selected names.  In later posts, I will dive more into the content of songs and albums that present the themes of ancient astronaut theory.  Frank Zappa’s Inca Roads will definitely be one of the songs discussed in detail.

In my post from November 30, 2009, “The King-dumb of the Crystal Skull” I closed with a link to an electronic group named Ancient Astronauts. I just glanced at their MySpace page at the time, nice banana suit…  A few days ago, I went back and listened to a few of their songs.  From what I gather, it is just a band name.  Another similar group would be God is an Astronaut. Here another electronic group just has a name that fosters the ideas of ancient aliens or that the concept of god being an astronaut.  They do not promote the ideas in their music from what I can tell.  In 1995, Alien Ant Farm took their name from the idea that humanity was placed on earth by aliens and we are like ants in an ant farm to them.

Band names like these help keep the idea that aliens have interfered with our ancestors in popular culture.  This is fairly harmless, I like to believe that people like musical groups more for their music than any name they may go by.  I doubt that Alien Ant Farm convinced too many people that we are merely ants compared to an advanced alien/owner civilization, but ancient astronaut theory received a little unneeded publicity as a result.
