Arsenic and Old Lazy Ideas

Arsenic and Old Lace is an excellent play and a classic movie starring Cary Grant. However, I chose this title to illustrate that new and impressive scientific discoveries are often saddled with the old and extremely speculative ideas of pseudoscience. On Thursday December 2nd, NASA announced the discovery of an arsenic bacteria in Mono Lake, California which is certainly unlike any life form ever discovered. It didn’t take too long for the conspiracy and ancient astronaut theorists to weigh in with some pretty far-fetched ideas. I happened to catch part of Richard C. Hoagland’s take on the announcement on my favorite weird and wrong radio show, Coast to Coast AM. It seems Richard C. Hoagland has spent quite a few years spreading “interesting” ideas about NASA and so-called ancient alien monuments on Mars, Earth and the Moon which can be explored in further detail here.

With Thursday’s announcement, Hoagland wasted no time in explaining that this is just another facet of the enormous conspiracy that NASA has been withholding the existence of extraterrestrial life from the world for decades. He is convinced that NASA is planning to gradually introduce minor and nonthreatening forms of alien life to the public over the course of the next several months, leading up to an eventual full disclosure of the existence of intelligent alien life. Mr. Hoagland repeatedly used the oddly confusing term “the world will become pregnant” for his predicted disclosure event. He seems to believe it will coincide with with the all important arbitrary (world ending?) date of 2012. Hoagland also demonstrated a classic pseudoscientist tactic by (mis)citing the statements of Stephen Hawking including that humankind must leave earth and a warning about communicating with aliens. While Stephen Hawking is certainly a brilliant scientist, it does not mean that he is always correct and his statements in April of this year are more of a matter of opinion than anything else. Luckily, Hoagland could find something that he could use to substantiate his statements in the form of Dr. Hawking’s words – usually he is too busy undermining the already embattled NASA and it’s scientists with his outlandish and unfounded conspiracy theories. The discovery of arsenic bacteria right here on Earth is as amazing as it is historic, but it is in no way related to Richard C. Hoagland’s  astounding leaps of logic. It seems that “the world has become pregnant” with Hoagland’s ridiculous ideas and is in serious need of an “abortion” and future “birth control.”

Riley Martin: Friend of the Biaviians

Riley Martin

Riley Martin (from http://www.rileymartin.com/about_riley_martin.html)

Riley Martin is alien abductee, author, radio personality and bullshit artist controversial figure.  Abducted several times over the course of his life, Riley Martin has made quiet a living based on his “experiences.”  It was difficult to find out much about Riley Martin’s past legal issues on the internet, but Martin has told a story on-air about being caught with over 600 lbs. of Marijuana in the back of a pick-up truck.  Here is how Riley Martin’s alien exploits began from his own website, rileymartin.com:

“Riley L. Martin was born May 9, 1946, in Mississippi to a family of sharecroppers of African American and Native American descent. This story starts one night when Riley was seven years old… he saw a strange light out by the river, he tried to wake up his brothers and not one of them would wake from their sleep. The next night the lights were brighter and little Riley was more excited and this time he tried to wake up everyone in the house including his parents. Then on the third night when the lights appeared again he didn’t attempt to wake his family… he took his trusted dog Brownboy and they went to the river to investigate.

That fateful night; two aliens took little Riley on his first trip to their mothership near Saturn. Riley’s second trip was when he was 18. It was on this trip that they placed a strange looking headset on him… then in a matter of seconds download into his brain… 144,000 different symbols…then while Riley slept they downloaded the history of humanity, alien insights, and a whole lot more. Riley made friends with this little alien he calls Tan. O-Qua Tangin Wann.”

Riley martin went on to write a book, The Coming of Tan in 1987 based on his numerous encounters with a group of friendly aliens named the Biaviians.  In 2008, Mr. Martin re-released his book as the Coming of Tan Millennium Edition.  After numerous appearances on TV and radio shows such as The Jerry Springer Show, Howard Stern and Coast to Coast AM, Martin decided to broadcast his stories on internet radio and eventually on Howard Stern’s satellite radio channel Howard 101. One of the more interesting things about Riley Martin is that he will sell you one of the 144,000 symbols mentioned above hand-drawn by himself for about $40.  This is your ticket to the Biaviian Mothership (located just off of Saturn) that will rescue true believers like Martin when the end of the world comes in 2012.  Another yahoo named Michael also makes claims about being aboard the Biaviian spaceship and has the approval of Martin.  Subcontracting, already?   An even more interesting business has sprung from Martin’s work with his Biaviian symbols in the form of a symbol interpretation by a psychic named Elanthra for about $20.  Of course if you’re going to be traveling with the Biaviians with your childish artwork/ticket you have to know your “soul’s expression” which is magically derived from Martin’s artwork.  How do the Biaviians get paid?  I mean it is their spaceship that will have to bear the brunt of a mass of human travelers and those are their symbols in the first place…  Oh, they probably don’t need money, but Riley Martin sure seems to.

Riley Martin is constantly battling for more time, more money or both with Howard Stern and Sirius.  After several attempts to negotiate by phone while using a lot of derogatory and racially insensitive language, Riley quits for a time only to come crawling back later.  Are these radio stunts or just craziness?  I lean toward the craziness explanation.  It seems that Riley Martin gets paid about $500 for his weekly one-hour show… with the symbol business I say that’s pretty good.  In the on-line store at rileymartin.com, you can buy a “Riley Martin Sacred Cherokee Headband” for $30, a talking boblehead of Martin himself for $40 and my personal favorite a piss jug for $20.  It was revealed on the Howard Stern show that Mr. Martin will use a jug to urinate in, rather than utilizing his indoor plumbing while broadcasting his show.  This may have something to do with him drinking a 12-pack of Bud Light while doing his show.

Alright, so you’ve been introduced to an interesting individual.  What does he have to do with ancient astronaut theory?  Mr. Martin says that the Biaviians destroyed the dinosaurs with nuclear weapons to allow our mammalian ancestors to develop and have been visiting the earth and breeding with humanity for thousands of years.  Riley Martin makes a lot of other wild claims with, you guessed it: no tangible evidence.  All Martin has is his stories and as time has progressed, his persona.  This explains about 90% of the crap he sells on-line.  Most of it is related to himself and not his message.  Other people have picked up on the entertaining Riley Martin besides Howard Stern.  Here are links to a Riley Martin Soundboard where you can play clips of some of Riley’s famous phrases and another site that will “translate” a block of text or a website into Martin’s signature speech patterns and alien laced vocabulary.  I did it with this blog and it was pretty entertaining.  Also, here are a couple of clips from YouTube.  Enjoy the weirdness!

Coast to Coast AM

Coast to Coast AM is a nationally syndicated radio show dealing primarily with paranormal and conspiracy theories.  Paranormal, pseudoscience and conspiracy theories and more are all present: UFOs, 2012, ancient astronaut theory, ghosts and ghost hunting, crytozoology, demon possession, 9/11, the JFK assassination, New World Order/Illuminati, D.B. Cooper, etc.  Coast to Coast AM can be heard locally in the DFW Metroplex on KLIF 570 AM starting at midnight Monday through Friday.  Weekend shows are also available and start much earlier than midnight.  Previous shows can be downloaded via the the show’s website if you enroll in a monthly subscription service.

I wanted to see how many shows in the past month have dealt with the topic of ancient aliens, so I reviewed the past shows page for the last thirty days from September 4th to October 4th.  Below is a list of what I found and a brief description based from the individual show’s summary page, followed by the scientific reasoning that opposes the topic:

Alien Hypotheses 9/28/09
Guest Mac Tonnies speaks of the silver suited “ghost of the ancestors” in Zimbabwe being associated with metallic craft, a reported hybridization program and Martian artifacts at Cydonia.

The Science: According to Kenneth L. Feder’s book, Frauds, Myths and Mysteries in Archaeology cave paintings, native legends and even the Bible have been misinterpreted to be evidence of ancient alien contact for decades.  Taking images and stories at face value without the correct cultural context of a people can yield to all kinds of conclusions such as seeing helicopters in Egyptian hieroglyphics or a lotus flower that is part of a light bulb instead.  Without the concepts of space travel, light bulbs or helicopters I wonder what would be seen by all of these researchers?

UFO Cases in China & Australia 9/20/09
Guest Bill Chalker outlined alien connections to various isolated cultures and tribes, which suggests interactions have been going for an extremely long time, and there may eventually be DNA evidence to support his claims.

The Science: DNA research as been conducted for several decades and nothing has been found to appear alien anywhere in the human genetic code. Some scientists and pseudoscientists will use the presence of “junk” DNA or unused genetic data to be evidence of alien interference with human genetics. Chalker relies heavily on the testimony of alien abductees and inadequately or untested evidence.

Starchild Skull & Open Lines 9/18/09
Guest Lloyd Pye discusses the “900 year-old alien-hybrid skull of a child” known as the “Starchild Skull”. Pye also speaks about about human origins, ancient civilizations, and the work of Zecharia Sitchin.

The Science: The “Starchild Skull” was discovered 60-70 years ago in a non-scientific setting in a cave in Mexico. The skull underwent DNA tests 1999 revealing that is human and had human parents.  It most likely it belonged to a child suffering from hydrocephalus.

Martian Glyphs, Space Travel, & Energy 9/17/09
Guests George Haas and Bill Saunders commented on a supposed connection to monuments on the surface of Mars bearing a resemblance to Meso-American gods.  Haas and Saunders also suggest that the ET civilization responsible for these forms on Earth and Mars could very well be living below the surface of the red planet.

The Science: The area of Cydonia in question where the famous “face” was found has been  with higher resolution cameras in since Viking I’s 1976, 1998 and 2001. The newer images of the same area show the so-called monument to be a natural geologic formation. Rover missions and subsequent satellite exploration have not found remnants of any civilizations past or present on or below the surface of Mars.

Four shows in eleven days during the past thirty days!

You can listen to free streams of the radio show on the internet at CoastStream.com or check out a couple of old clips I found on YouTube:
