Introduction to Stargate
Stargate began as a 1994 feature film heavily influenced by the ideas of Erich von Däniken. In Stargate, ancient aliens had come to earth in the ancient past posing as gods and enslaved mankind. The stargate is a teleportation device that allows travel to another planet through a wormhole to another stargate. In the original movie, Ra (the ancient Egyptian sun god) is actually an evil alien posing as a god. Interesting enough, the character of Dr. Daniel Jackson seems to be based on von Däniken himself. Dr. Jackson is an archaeologist who is shunned by the scientific community after proposing that the Egyptian pyramids were built by ancient aliens. The United States Air Force is in control of the Stargate program and manages to keep it secret, feeding the paranoia of conspiracy theorists. In 1997, the film was adapted into a television series, Stargate SG-1 where it was soon discovered that the stargate could be calibrated to “dial” other planets, thus conveniently opening unlimited storylines for a weekly cable show. Stargate SG-1 expanded on van Däniken’s ideas, explored other facets of world mythology and established a science fiction mythology of its own. In 2003, the spin-off series Stargate Atlantis premiered and ran concurrently with the parent show until SG-1 was cancelled in 2007. In this version of Stargate, Atlantis is not a sunken continent, but a city/spaceship on a watery planet in the Pegasus galaxy. This show expanded on the mythology of Stargate SG-1 and explored the concept of Atlantis until it was cancelled in 2008. A third television series will premier in a couple of days on the SyFy channel called Stargate Universe. This show plans to visit several new galaxies via an ancient spaceship. A series of direct-to-DVD movies involving SG-1 have been recently produced with plans for at least one Stargate Atlantis direct-to-DVD movie as well. There was also an animated children’s show that lasted for one season entitled Stargate Infinity. A number of novels and comic books have also contributed to this science fiction franchise.
I wanted to make a separate page to give a brief rundown of Stargate because the premise is so steeped ancient astronaut theory. There will likely be a more than a few posts dealing with various topics from the movies and television shows during the course of this blog. I also plan to explore other theories of stargates unrelated to the science fiction franchise. You can learn probably more than you ever wanted to know about the Stargate franchise at GateWorld.net. Please enjoy the movie trailer for the original 1994 movie, Stargate.
